The 2024 All-Ireland football champions have received a rapturous welcome home in Co Armagh.

Thousands cheered the team as they brought the Sam Maguire cup back to the Cathedral City.

Around 15,000 free tickets were snapped up in 30 minutes for the event at the Athletic Grounds, with thousands more who were unable to secure tickets thronging the streets outside.

Manager Kieran McGeeney praised his side's resilience.

"They said we couldn't win tight games and we won tight games," he told the cheering crowd.

"Everybody said they wouldn't win the All-Ireland, and we won the All-Ireland!"

It is only the second time Armagh have won the All-Ireland title. The last was in 2002, a 22-year wait for the fans.

The team paraded the cup and took time to talk to friends and family and sign jerseys and footballs.

Kieran McGeeney thanked the fans for their unwavering support and said the homecoming reception had raised their reputation for fervour to new levels.

Among the crowd was retired Seattle firefighter Barry Pomeroy, who had been there for Armagh's 2002 win.

His south Armagh relatives insisted their lucky talisman stay until after the final.

He was at the semi-final against Kerry and described it as the finest sporting spectacle he had ever seen, adding that the last ten minutes of the final were "just a shooting match".

Fans have spent the day having their picture taken with the cup

There was a huge crowd at the Carrickdale Hotel on the Louth and Armagh border when the team arrived back last night.

Players brought the Sam Maguire to visit patients at Craigavon Area Hospital ahead of the main celebration.
