Gardaí investigating fires in Donegal and Limerick

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating two separate incidents of damage caused by fire in Co Donegal and Co Limerick.

In a statement, gardaí said they are investigating an incident of criminal damage by fire at a vacant premises in Limerick city.

It is understood the fire occurred at the former Railway Hotel on Parnell Street.

Fire services extinguished the blaze last night and no injuries were reported, according to gardaí.

Meanwhile gardaí said they are probing an incident in which a fire caused damage at a premises in Convoy, Co Donegal.

A piece of machinery was set alight during the incident, which took place yesterday morning.

Reports had circulated on social media that the fire was a result of the site having been earmarked for asylum seeker accommodation.

A garda spokesperson said the fire was brought under control by fire services and that no injuries have been reported.

It is understood that the site in Convoy is not or was not set to be used by the Department of Integration.

Gardaí said they are "aware of misinformation, disinformation and rumour" regarding the possible use of both buildings as accommodation for International Protection applicants.
