Historical human remains have been found at the Ulster Canal greenway in Co Monaghan.
The discovery was made by a member of the public at the recently opened Ulster Canal in Clones yesterday.
Gardaí have confirmed that they attended the scene after being alerted to the discovery and located a human skull on the embankment.
They said that the skull will be sent to a forensic anthropologist for examination.
Investigations are ongoing, gardaí said.
It is understood from the initial assessment of the remains that they are thought to be historic in nature, but a more detailed examination is required.
The discovery was made by Seány McCleary from Glaslough, who alerted gardaí.
He had been visiting the marina with his family yesterday afternoon.
Mr McCleary said he and his daughter walked up by the new embankment when he spotted the skull.
By coincidence, he has a background in archaeology as he did a degree in archaeological science.
Mr McCleary said that he is always looking out "subconsciously".
He said the crown of the skull was exposed and he knew straight away that it was an adult skull.
