A man in his 30s has died in a road crash in Co Longford in the early hours of this morning.

The single vehicle crash occurred on the N55 in Ballymahon at around 12.45am.

The man, who was travelling alone, was treated by emergency services at the scene, but was later pronounced dead.

His body has been removed to Regional Hospital Mullingar, where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The road is closed for a technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who were travelling in the area and who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, to contact Ballymahon Garda Station on 090 6432303, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

The man's death brings to 99 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.
