A man has been arrested following an incident in Derry city centre, in which two police officers were assaulted yesterday afternoon.

Police were alerted to an incident on Foyle Street at around 2pm, where a man had been shouting obscenities around children.

The man left the area when challenged by a member of the public.

Officers later found a man matching the descriotion of the man involved and arrested him on suspicion of disorderly behaviour.

When being taken to the officers' car the man, aged 33, assaulted two police officers, kicking out and attempted to run away.

He was restrained and was further arrested on suspicion of assault on police, and resisting police.

"Assaults on our officers are unacceptable," the PSNI said afterward, adding in a statement that the incident "serves as a reminder of the challenges and dangers our colleagues face in working to keep people safe."
