An Irish Coast Guard helicopter was involved in a medical evacuation from a cargo ship 296km off the south coast yesterday.

Shannon based Rescue 115 was tasked after the Irish Coast Guard was alerted by the AM Quebec that a crew member on board was seriously ill.

Rescue 115 met the 229-metre bulk carrier vessel far south of Ireland and winched the casualty on board while the ship continued on its voyage from Canada to Belgium.

The man was taken to Kerry University Hospital for treatment.

A UK Coast Guard plane provided overwatch on the rescue operation.

The AM Quebec departed from Port Cartier in Canada ten days ago and is due to dock in Ghent in Belgium in 2 days' time.
