Clogherhead RNLI is celebrating its 125th anniversary this weekend.

The station on the Co Louth coast was set up in 1899 and at that time, it was based in a corrugated galvanised iron boathouse.

It was built close to where the existing boathouse stands in the fishing village.

Clogherhead RNLI Chairman Noel Phillips said the facilities today are far more advanced than 125 years ago.

"The lifeboat station that stands in Clogherhead now houses a much more technologically advanced boat compared to the vessels that served the northeast coastline back then.

"Nevertheless, it is proudly employed by our volunteer crew to do the same job as all its predecessors did over the last 125 years, to help save lives at sea", he said.

The first lifeboat based in Clogherhead RNLI cost IR£582.

The charity praised the local community and the public for their support and generosity

A state-of-the-art all-weather lifeboat now serves the northeast coast from the boathouse.

The RNLI said its volunteer crew members live locally and are on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

The charity praised the local community and the public for their support and generosity.

"The community's support is essential to help us continue the great tradition of saving lives at sea along our coast, through the voluntary efforts of our local men and women in the lifeboat service at Clogherhead", said Tony Campion, Clogherhead RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager.

The 125th anniversary will be marked with two events this weekend.

A "celebration dip" will take place today beside the station where swimmers are invited to participate in an aerial beach photo before a dip in the sea.

A short service and wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Clogherhead boathouse tomorrow afternoon, followed by a historical exhibition and live music.
