The general sentiment at the pop-up market along the Grand Canal in Dublin is one of despair for the many International Protection applicants sleeping in tents, but criticism also of how the overall situation is being handled.

Twice in recent weeks people who were living in tents in the south city centre have been moved to proper tented accommodation on State-owned sites - firstly from the Mount Street area and then from along the Grand Canal last week.

Many people said they are not surprised that new tents continue to be pitched along the canal and indicated it was obvious to them last week that this was going to happen because of the ongoing accommodation shortage.

There is some annoyance over barricades being placed along the canal, with people at the market stalls saying it sends the wrong message and also impacts the general area for people walking by.

A solicitor who works locally said he could understand how the Government is burdened by the high numbers of people coming to Ireland to seek international protection and that there is no easy fix.

Others said they hope the situation and the Government's response does not damage Ireland's reputation as a "welcoming" nation.

A local resident said Ireland should not compare its migration policy to the rest of Europe but seek to do better than everyone else.

He said people should be able to come here to a thriving and safe country whether it is to seek asylum or work.

Many Irish people had been afforded that opportunity abroad when they left the country in the past for better opportunities, he said.

Others declined to comment saying they held "strong" but different views regarding the situation.

Local residents' groups have expressed concerns at the number of asylum seekers sleeping rough along the canal.

This morning, more than 90 tents were pitched along the canal between Baggot Street Bridge and Wilton Place.

The encampment is mostly asylum seekers who have been given tents by agencies due to an absence of State accommodation.

They were prevented from pitching tents closer to Mount Street, where the International Protection Accommodation Services office is located, due to barriers being erected.
