The Marine Institute has taken a significant step in delivering its climate action roadmap following the installation of solar panels at its national headquarters in Co Galway.
The building, in Oranmore, now has 783 solar panels operating on its roof, which will produce up to 292,000 kilowatts of renewable electricity a year.
Energy consumption in homes is measured in kilowatt hours, which is the equivalent of one domestic unit of electricity. An average home in Ireland consumes around 4,500 units a year.
Since 2015, the combined efforts of staff at the headquarters building has resulted in a 41% reduction in energy consumption.
Separately, 76 panels have been installed at the Marine Institutes facility in Newport, Co Mayo.
That installation will generate 29,000 kilowatts a year.
