Dublin Samaritans mural aims to mend the cracks

A new mural has been unveiled to highlight the work of Dublin Samaritans.

The image on the side of a house on Montague Lane, off Camden street in the city centre, is the portrait of a man with a number of cracks on his face.

Those cracks have been filled in with gold paint using the Japanese art form of "Kintsugi".

In Kintsugi, the cracks are transformed into a beautiful feature.

It has been created by artist Joe Caslin who said the idea is to reflect the work of the charity, Dublin Samaritans, which offers a 24-hour emotional support helpline.

Describing the artwork, Mr Caslin said "the man is facing you, and is telling you he may have been broken at one point"

He said filling in those cracks with gold paint echos the work of the charity's volunteers; "when someone is at a low point there is someone on the phone who can help you."

Director of Dublin Samaritans Mary McMahon said there is a call to Samaritans' helpline every 61 seconds, and that volunteers answer more than 1,000 calls a day from people struggling to cope.

She said it is great that people reach out and that there are a lot of issues heard over the phone.

"A lot of mental health issues, mental illness, a lot of relationship problems, financial problems," she added.

She said people will always be asked about suicide, but that "you don't have to be suicidal to call us".

Ms McMahon became a volunteer herself 22 years ago and has appealed for people to come forward to also become a volunteer for the Samaritans.

People can commit for three hours per week once they complete a few weeks of training.

Olwyn Greene, Director of Awareness at Samaritans, said she hopes people will stop and look at the mural and take in the symbolism of it.

She said: "We hope that by somebody talking to Samaritans it will help them fill in the cracks, we can't promise to mend them but we hope that they can fill in the cracks.

"The reason we do this is to let anyone who is struggling at all to know the number to ring which is 116 123."
