Fifty firefighters from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) worked to extinguish a fire in Belfast today, a spokesperson for the service said.

The incident happened shortly before 5.30pm this evening after a small fire broke out on board a vessel in the Harland and Wolff dry dock in the Belfast harbour estate.

NIFRS said all crew on board the vessel were evacuated safely with no injuries reported.

"The fire occurred in a tank within the vessel that was being worked on by a shipyard subcontractor and the cause has been determined as being accidental," a spokesperson said.

"Four NIFRS pumping appliances with one aerial, one foam appliance, a specialist rescue team and a marine team plus a number of supervisory officers attended the incident - a total of approximately 50 firefighters."

They added: "NIFRS worked closely with Harland and Wolff throughout the incident, committing NIFRS firefighters with breathing apparatus and water jets to extinguish the fire."
