More than €3 million in funding has been committed for a new child-only respite centre in Co Monaghan.

Minister of State with responsibility for Disability Anne Rabbitte announced the plan during a visit to the county this week.

A total of €3.1 million has been earmarked to develop a new five-bedroom children's respite facility in Co Monaghan, catering for children in Cavan and Monaghan.

In the period while this is being built, Ms Rabbitte announced additional funding to provide an interim service in Monaghan which will open by October this year.

"It means families aren't left waiting for the much-needed respite capacity that's needed in the county," she said.

At present, there is just one respite facility in Cavan serving both counties, and it is shared by both adults and children on a week-on, week-off basis.

There are 49 children currently on a waiting list to access that service.

Parents of children with disabilities in the region have long called for increased and improved services.

Ms Rabbitte also announced €4.6 million to develop a new day service centre to replace the existing Clogher House in Rathcorrick, Co Cavan, along with a further €7.5 million to develop a day service in Cootehill in Co Cavan.

The funding is being provided through the HSE.
