The funeral has taken place in Co Tyrone of Garda killer Pearse McAuley.

The former IRA man was found dead in his flat in Strabane earlier this week.

The 59-year-old had been living in the town since his release from prison two years ago after serving a 12-year sentence for a violent attack on his then-wife, Sinn Féin TD Pauline Tully.

He was part of the IRA gang that shot dead Detective Garda Jerry McCabe during the attempted robbery of a post office van in Adare in Co Limerick in 1996, having escaped from Brixton Prison five years earlier.

His coffin was brought to the Church of the Immaculate Conception where mourners had gathered.

It was covered in the tricolour and a black beret and gloves were placed on top.

They were removed before it was carried into the church.

Mr McAuley was buried in a local cemetery after Requiem Mass.
