Injured paraglider rescued after Conor Pass cliff crash

An injured paraglider has been rescued after crashing on a cliff on the Conor Pass in west Kerry.

The man's injuries are said to be significant but not life-threatening.

Members of the Dingle branch of the Irish Coast Guard managed to scale a cliff to reach the man who was trapped on a dangerous ledge about 60 metres above the road on the well-known mountain pass.

It is understood the man was injured and became trapped on a cliff-ledge when he crashed his glider on the mountainside above the Conor Pass road shortly before 6pm.

The injured man managed to raise the alarm and local gardaí identified his location.

The Conor Pass road was closed by gardaí during the two-hour rescue operation.

Frank Heidtke of the Dingle Coast Guard said it was a very challenging rescue operation.

"Conditions were fairly poor. It was dark, foggy and wet," Mr Heidtke said.

"We managed to reach the ledge with ropes from above and carefully lowered the casualty in a stretcher about 60 metres down on to the road below.

"He was very cold and in a lot of pain."

The man was taken to University Hospital Kerry for treatment.
