Paddy O'Mahony was remembered as "gentle and humble in heart" at his funeral mass in Co Kerry today.

The 84-year-old was found dead in his home near Castlemaine last Sunday morning.

He was a firearms dealer and enthusiast and a founding member of An Ríocht Gun Club and the Kingdom Ríocht Rifle and Shooting Range.

Paddy, who was recently widowed, is survived by his five children, grandchildren, and sisters, nephews and nieces.

In his homily at Kitallagh Church in Castlemaine today, Father Danny Broderick recalled Paddy as "gentle and humble in heart" and said he was a father, grandfather, neighbour and "powerful" friend to many.

A framed photograph of Mr O’Mahony and his late wife Lillie adorned the coffin.

Addressing Mr O’Mahony’s family, Fr Broderick said they had "a great cross of grief" to bear.

Three sets of gifts were brought to the altar at the start of the mass: a lily to represent Lillie the love of his life, the moderator said; a plant to represent his newfound love of horticulture; and a tricolour and gloves and medals to represent his time as captain in the reserve Defence Forces.

Following the mass, he was laid to rest in the cemetery attached to the church.
