An investigation is under way into the cause of four separate fires at shops in Cork city centre.

The incidents happened at a number of retail outlets on Cornmarket and St Patrick's Street at around 5.30pm.

It is understood that each of the fires were small and brought under control by staff in the retail premises.

Cork City Fire Brigade said multiple units attended to the suspicious fires in commercial premises in the city centre.

A spokesperson said crews from Angelsea Street Headquarters and Ballyvolane Fire Station dealt with the incidents which were all made safe.

Gardaí are investigating the incident in which there was no serious damage or injuries.

However, it is understood that one individual may have been involved in all of the incidents.
