Man dies, child injured after being hit by car in Mayo

A man who was seriously injured following a traffic collision in Ballina Co Mayo yesterday has died.

The 33-year-old pedestrian was accompanying his niece when they were both struck by a car, close to a pedestrian crossing, at Lord Edward Street in the town.

The injured man, who is from the area, was taken to Mayo University Hospital after sustaining critical injuries. He died there this evening.

The road has since reopened

A garda forensic examination of the scene where the incident occurred was completed earlier today and the road reopened to traffic this afternoon.

The young girl was treated for non life threatening injuries and has been discharged from hospital.

Detectives investigating the circumstances of the collision have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
