'She's still Michelle to us': Clonoe hails incoming First Minister O'Neill

Sinn Féin's First Minister Designate Michelle O'Neill grew up in Clonoe, Co Tyrone - a small but busy spot near Coalisland.

From the balcony of the impressive local GAA club and Community Centre, Brian Duffin could point out the housing estate - Coney Park - which she used to live in.

"She was in very close proximity to the club and was very involved in everything that went on there", he said.

Mr Duffin - a former chairman of Clonoe O'Rahilly's GFC - said he knew her and her family well, and everyone in Clonoe is immensely proud of her.

"It's a big step, a momentous step", he said, but "she is still Michelle to us, down to earth and although she is very busy, she's still very involved and hands on in the community".

Local Sinn Féin councillor Eimear Carney shares that pride in Ms O'Neill who, she said, always stands up for everybody in all communities.

She said she could not think of a better person to take on the job of First Minister, and that when "Michelle says she's going to be a First Minister for all, she means it."

Ms Carney said that her success will also act as an inspiration for young women to get involved in politics, a view shared by another local woman, Sharon Gervin.

Ms Gervin said Michelle O'Neill had a baby at a young age and "didn't get everything handed to her, she has worked hard".

She is very well suited to the job of First Minister, she said, "she has lots of experience and she reaches out to everybody, it doesn't matter who you are or what you are" and she added, "it's great to see them up and running again".
