Galway Bay FM presenter, Keith Finnegan, has announced he is to retire after 34 years of broadcasting.

The 62-year-old broadcaster broke the news to his listeners on his flagship current affairs programme, 'Galway Talks'.

He will step down on 12 April but says he will always be "intrinsically associated" with the station.

Keith Finnegan started out as a weekend music presenter on Radio West in 1989, later rebranded as Galway Bay FM. He went to steer the company in his CEO/director role, before focusing on the radio programme for the past two years.

Reflecting on over three decades of broadcasting, Mr Finnegan shared some personal and professional highlights, including daily interviews with local and international guests, participation in the three-day charity event Radiothon, an invitation to the White House for St Patrick's Day, and leading the St Patrick's Day parade as Grand Marshal in St. Louis alongside his wife, Joan.

His achievements include winning IMRO radio awards and induction into the IMRO Hall of Fame.

Mr Finnegan thanked his production team for their contribution to the long running show and to the listeners across Galway City and County for their "continued loyalty and engagement, which has been the bedrock of the program's longevity".

He also paid tribute to his daughter, Katie, who has worked alongside him as his producer for eight years.

Reflecting on his radio, Mr Finnegan shared a humorous anecdote from his childhood, where he and his father built a radio transmitter in their home in Mervue setting the stage for his lifelong passion for broadcasting.
