A convent in Lanesborough, Co Longford, which was set on fire yesterday evening was earmarked for accommodation for Ukrainian arrivals, the Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council has confirmed.

Fine Gael Councillor Colm Murray said that there was as yet no start date for people to move in but that work had begun.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the fire, which was soon brought under control by fire services.

No injuries were reported and gardaí said a technical examination of the scene will take place.

Mr Murray said that a meeting had taken place yesterday with some local representatives, members of staff of the local council, and the owner of the premises.

He said he understood that the fire began at the front door but that it was quickly brought under control, with little damage.
