A fire broke out at Edenderry Swimming Pool in Co Offaly this afternoon.

Two fire units, one from Edenderry and one from Portarlington responded to the incident.

The fire is believed to have started in the plant room with some smoke damage in other parts of the building.

In an update on Facebook this evening, Edenderry Swimming Pool thanked the fire crew involved in tackling the blaze this afternoon.

"We cannot thank you enough, we are blessed to have a great crew of fire fighters in Edenderry. Thank you to all the staff for their due diligence, awareness and first class responses to the fire, we cannot thank you enough.

"All lessons and classes are cancelled until further notice, and we will be in touch soon regarding lessons booked.

Fine Gael Offaly County Councillor Noel Cribben said its heartbreaking for the staff.

"We're absolutely devastated. The pool has just been freshly painted for the New Year. The sauna and steam room have been damaged so its not looking for good for the pool for the next few months. At 50 years old the pool is a little dated but it provides a great service for the community and is still used daily. There are 400 kids on a waiting list for lessons," said Cllr Cribben.

"It will be a sad walk through the pool tomorrow to assess the damage but we're thankful there were no injuries or loss of life."
