Woman, 80s, dies in three-vehicle collision on N17

A woman in her 80s has died following a three-vehicle collision on the N17 near the Galway-Mayo border.

The crash, involving a van and two cars, occurred at Gortnagunned between the villages of Ballindine and Milltown shortly after 10am.

The woman was a passenger in one of the cars. Her death is the 11th fatality on Irish roads since the start of the year.

The driver of the same car, a woman in her 40s, was brought to University Hospital Galway (UHG) with non-life threatening injuries.

The road is closed while a technical examination is being carried out

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to UHG with serious injuries.

A woman in her 20s was driving the second car and was uninjured.

The N17 was closed for a technical examination, but has since reopened.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the collision, including road users with camera footage, to come forward.
