Boy, 14, pleads guilty to dangerous driving over fatal Galway crash

A 14-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of two teenagers in Co Galway last year.

Two other 14-year-olds, Kirsty Bohan and Lukas Joyce, died following the single-vehicle crash, at Glennagarraun, outside Headford on 10 April, 2023.

The accused cannot be identified because of his age.

At Galway Circuit Court today, he pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to a teenage girl arising out of the same incident.

He also admitted further charges of driving without insurance and the use of a mechanically propelled vehicle without the consent of its owner.

The boy stood beside his mother for the arraignment process.

Defence barrister Michael Collins SC told the court his client was two months shy of his 14th birthday when the offences occurred.

Mr Collins said the evidence in the case will "disclose facts and circumstances that are particularly tragic".

He said it would be appropriate that the court direct a report from the probation and welfare services to assist when sentencing.

Judge Brian O'Callaghan directed the report and adjourned the case to next month.

The boy was remanded on continuing bail and his attendance was excused from the next court date, after the court heard the full sentence hearing is unlikely to proceed at that time.
