There was "no trace of gas" at a Co Westmeath school evacuated over a reported gas leak, a Gas Networks Ireland spokesperson has said.

Mullingar Educate Together National School contacted parents this morning to collect their children who have been evacuated from the building "due to a suspected gas leak".

Almost 400 students attend the school that has a staff of around 40.

The school is in Rathgowan, on the outskirts of the town.

Principal of the school Róisín Nic Tighearnáin told RTÉ News: "The school was evacuated due to a suspected gas leak."

"Health and safety procedures are being followed. All members of the school community are safe," she added.

Gas Networks Ireland said it responded to a report of a suspected smell of gas at the school at 10.35am and "no trace of gas was found".

"Our responder arrived at the school at 11.02am to assess the situation, with a larger crew arriving at 11.11am. A number of checks and tests were carried out, but no trace of gas was found. Our crew left the site at 3.10pm," a Gas Networks Ireland spokesperson said in a statement.
