Sinn Féin has written to the Northern Secretary asking for immediate movement to break the Stormont deadlock.

Michelle O'Neill wrote to Chris Heaton-Harris saying enough time had been expended in negotiation with the DUP.

She said despite the fact that the Windsor Framework had been operational since October, detailed discussions with the DUP on the restoration of powersharing had so far proved fruitless.

The Northern Secretary has made constant statements in recent months suggesting progress.

Most recently, he said the talks with the DUP were in the "final, final stages".

It is understood that Ms O'Neill expressed the need for urgency to conclude negotiations, saying public patience was running out.

She has asked him to respond in the coming days.

The DUP has said it wants to see guarantees in legislation over Northern Ireland's ability to trade freely with Britain and its constitutional position within the UK.

Northern Ireland has been without a functioning executive for the last 22 months.

The DUP withdrew in a row over the implementation of post Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland.
