The inquest into the death of a 35-year-old man, who was murdered in front of his wife and two children at their home at Ballincollig in Co Cork over five years ago, has been told that significant progress has been made in the case, and it is anticipated a file will be submitted to the DPP in the near future.

There have been a number of adjournments, most recently on 27 April this year, pending the completion of the garda investigation into the death of Mikolaj Wilk.

A previous hearing was told that the horticulturist and landscape gardener, who was originally from Poland, died from haemorrhage and shock due to multiple blows with a sharp weapon associated with a traumatic brain injury.

Mr Wilk was attacked and killed by a gang of up to five men at the family home at Maglin, near Ballincollig, in the early hours of 10 June 2018. His wife, Elzbieta, sustained extensive injuries to her hands and arms during the attack.

Sgt Fergus Twomey told Coroner Philip Comyns at Cork City Coroner's Court today that Mr Wilk's murder has been an active and on-going garda investigation.

"Significant progress has been made and I expect a comprehensive investigation file will be submitted to the DPP, I anticipate, in the near future," Sgt Twomey said.

His application for an adjournment until 25 April 2024 was granted by Coroner Philip Comyns.
