Galway County Council has approved plans for a medical device manufacturing plant near Athenry, which is expected to lead to the creation of up to 1,000 jobs.

Dexcom International Limited has secured permission for a 40,000 square metre facility on lands at Ballygarraun, subject to a number of conditions.

The Council says the proposed development is in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area, and is in keeping with the County Development Plan.

Most of the conditions attached to the decision relate to the management and protection of the existing environment around the site.

Construction work will be permitted between 8am and 6pm, from Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 2pm on Saturdays.

The development will be carried out on a phased basis and when completed, Dexcom will have to ensure shuttle buses and bike share arrangements are in place, to allow employees avail of sustainable transport options when travelling to and from work.

The proposed facility would include a four-storey manufacturing plant, with warehouses, production areas and administration offices. It will have parking spaces for a total of 500 cars, with 100 of these having EV charging facilities.

The US multinational makes glucose monitoring technologies for the management of diabetes.

The plant in Co Galway will be its first manufacturing site in Europe and will be built on IDA owned lands.
