HSE management are on site at a nursing home in Waterford following the cancellation of the home's registration by the Health Information and Quality Authority.
The HSE is taking charge "with immediate effect" of the nursing home run by Aperee Living at Ballygunner in Waterford city after it was informed of HIQA's cancellation of the registration.
According to the HSE, Aperee Living, which runs a number of nursing homes around the country and has its head office in Cork, did not appeal HIQA's notice of cancellation.
The HSE is now liaising with the company and, in accordance with the Health Act in such circumstances, is on-site and taking charge with immediate effect.
The nursing home has 44 residents and the south east community healthcare section of the HSE has said that its focus is to ensure their welfare, at a "difficult time" for them and their families.
It is understood the process of reviewing how the nursing home is run and how it should proceed into the future will take at least a number of weeks.
In a statement, Aperee Living Group said it is "working closely" with the HSE's south-east community healthcare section and is also working with staff at the facility, as well as Nursing Homes Ireland and other stakeholders, to ensure disruption to the lives of residents is kept to a minimum.
