The Office of Public Works has confirmed the M4 access road and car park at Castletown House in Co Kildare will remain operational until at least the end of September.
The move was confirmed by the OPW this evening and follows an agreement to continue dialogue with the owner of the private lands at Castletown Estate.
The planned closure of this access from tomorrow will not now take place.
Visitors to Castletown House should continue to use the M4 entrance on the Barnhall Road.
In a statement this evening, the owners of the land Kilross Properties said that following the purchase of the land in March they issued a draft license agreement to the OPW to formally regularise the use of the access road and car park.
The statement said the owners "were surprised with the resistance that they were met with from the OPW in respect of trying to formalise the licence agreement".
The statement said however that "by July 7th all bar one of the conditions of the proposed licence had been agreed".
The owners claim the condition the OPW would not agree was the requirement for it to provide public lighting along the access road and the within the car park.
"This standard condition was a requirement of our insurers as the access road to the car park has no footpath and because the surface of the car park was loose uneven stone," the statement said.
"It was also required for health and safety reasons in the interests of ensuring the safety of the members of the public."
The owners said despite their "best efforts" to try to secure agreement on this condition the OPW were not for turning.
They said that because the OPW refused to install public lighting, its insurers refused to cover the continued use of an unilluminated car park and access road.
The statement said the owners "were left with no option other than to formally notify the OPW in July that in light of their refusal to agree the condition, they could no longer facilitate access to Castletown over the access road and car park after a certain date".
The statement also said that the owners are local developers living and working in north Kildare who came together to purchase the land at Castletown on the open market in a process where the OPW was one of the underbidders.
It said the owners purchased the land with the intention of bringing forward uses which are in line with the current zoning on the land and with full regard to Castletown House and Demense.
"The uses envisaged include leisure, amenity, recreational, tourism, and employment uses. The Owners have never intended to and will never propose or promote the use of the land at Castletown for housing" the statement read.
"At no stage since our acquisition of the land or since have the Owners sought to sell the land to the OPW.
"The OPW approached the owners on two occasions to acquire part of the land, but those discussions were unsuccessful."
In a statement, the OPW said it is aware that the private landowners have issued a statement in relation to the matter.
The OPW said it is focused "on the good faith dialogue with the landowners in the public interest and does not intend to comment on the details of this statement".
It said it continues to work to achieve an appropriate outcome that is acceptable to all.
