Clare County Council has issued a bathing ban at Mountshannon on the shores of Lough Derg as a result of the presence of an algae bloom.
The council said the prohibition has been introduced at the popular boating and cruising location on the advice of the HSE, and follows the detection of blue/green algae at the bathing area and at Mountshannon pier.
The algae can produce toxins which can be harmful to animals that drink the water and can cause skin rashes if people come in contact with it.
Mountshannon is a blue flag location, which will now be removed to be replaced by a red flag, until the water quality improves.
