A coastal path in Co Down has been closed after a whale was found washed up.

The National Trust asked the public to avoid the path at Ballymacormick Point near Ballyholme.

The trust said the animal had been identified as a Northern Bottlenose Whale.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency said it was liaising with the trust about disposal.

Signs were erected asking people to stay back and keep their animals away

In a social media post, the trust: "Given the size of the whale and the challenging terrain, this is likely to challenging removal process.

"We appreciate your understanding and support."

The path is popular with walkers and dog owners.
