Cork City Council has approved the largest residential development plan to date for the city.

The development includes 1,325 residential units, including apartments and duplexes, in ten buildings at the Goulding's site, Centre Park Road and Monahan Road.

There are 51 conditions attached to the council's approval for the multi-million euro development submitted in June by Leeside Quays Limited, a subsidiary of O'Callaghan Properties.

The Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) application proposed the demolition of the existing on-site buildings and structures and site clearance to facilitate the construction of 658 one-bed units, 465 two-bed units and 202 three-bed units, with the proposed buildings ranging in height from two to 14 storeys over a single basement.

Details of the 51 conditions have yet to be published.

The decision to grant planning permission has been welcomed by the developers who say it will be "a game changer for the city and its Docklands".

In a statement, managing director of O'Callaghan Properties Brian O'Callaghan said that as stated from the outset "the project depends on a positive planning decision from An Bord Pleanála regarding the former IFI site at Marino Point which will allow Gouldings to re-locate from the Docklands".

Planning permission granted by the council to Gouldings is being appealed to An Bord Pleanála and a decision is awaited.

Cork Chamber has also welcomed the granting of planning permission in the city's docks calling it "a transformative step for the city".
