A number of packages believed to contain cocaine have been found washed up on the coast of Co Donegal, gardaí have confirmed.

At around 8.30am, gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a package at Bá Bhaile Thiarnáin, Fánaid and a short time later, a similar second package was discovered at Tramore Beach, Dunfanaghy.

Gardaí recovered both packages and the contents of which will be analysed by Forensic Science Ireland.

A technical examination is also under way at both scenes.

A number of units are involved in the investigation including the Garda Air Support Unit, the Garda Water Unit and other state and voluntary services.

Searches are under way along the north Donegal coastline and will continue over the coming days.
