Two men appear in court over post office deception

Two men have appeared before Carlow Circuit Court charged with the attempted deception of a post office worker and the attempted theft of a pension.

The incident occurred on 21 January last year in Hosey's post office in Carlow.

Declan Haughney of Pollerton Road, Carlow was charged with one count of the attempted deception of a post office worker and one count of attempting to steal the pension of Peadar Doyle.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

His co-accused Gareth Coakley, of John Sweeney Park in Carlow, was also charged with the same offences. He also pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution told the court that the case that could go on into next week.

A jury panel is now in the process of being sworn in.
