Publican wrongly convicted of drugs offence dies age 88

A publican wrongly convicted of allowing the sale of drugs at his premises in 1995 has died aged 88.

Frank Shortt from Redcastle, Inishowen, Co Donegal, was the owner of the Point Inn in Quigley's Point.

He spent 27 months in prison over the false conviction.

In October 2005, the High Court awarded Mr Shortt €1.93m in damages for the miscarriage of justice and granted him substantial legal costs.

Following an appeal, the Supreme Court increased the damages to over €4.5m.

Mr Shortt also received a letter of apology from the then garda commissioner Noel Conroy.

Mr Shortt, who died yesterday at Letterkenny University Hospital, is survived by his wife and five children.
