A man has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming near Tramore, Co Waterford.
The incident happened at about 6.30pm in the Newtown Cove area.
A man and a woman who were swimming got into difficulties and other swimmers in the area raised the alarm.
Emergency services including gardaí, ambulance staff and crews from the local lifeboat station, Coast Guard and also the R117 search and rescue helicopter went to the scene.
Both people were taken from the water and brought to University Hospital Waterford, but the man was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
It is understood the woman was suffering from shock.
They are believed to have been visitors to the area.
Newtown Cove is located south-west of the main beach in Tramore and is popular with swimmers.
