Former mayor of Limerick John Quinn has died aged 89.
A native of Limerick city, Mr Quinn was first elected to Limerick City Council in 1979 and was returned in the 1985 and 1991 elections. He retired from the council in 1999.
He joined politics in the 1950s and left Fianna Fáil to join the Progressive Democrats in 1985.
Mr Quinn became the first Progressive Democrats mayor of Limerick in 1992.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Gerald Mitchell paid tribute to Mr Quinn and said that he was "always a very honourable and upright man".
"As both councillor and mayor he was always courteous and well-liked by all the council staff he dealt with," said Mr Mitchell in a statement.
Chief executive of the council Dr Pat Daly said Mr Quinn "leaves behind an incredible legacy of service to his community and his county".
Mr Quinn's wife, Kathleen (Kay) Quinn died in June 2022. They raised six children together.
