A 38-year-old man has been jailed for at least nine years for the killing of tattoo artist Aiden Mann in Downpatrick in Co Down last year.

Barry Donnelly pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He was sentenced before Belfast Crown Court and will serve an indeterminate custodial sentence, with a minimum tariff of nine years.

Mr Mann, 28, died after being attacked on Church Street, Downpatrick, on 3 January 2022.

Following today's sentencing, Detective Inspector Foreman from the PSNI said that Mr Mann was chased by Donnelly before being "stabbed repeatedly in this totally shocking attack".

It happened in the late morning, when members of the public were going about their business.

The PSNI thanked the members of the public who ran to Mr Mann's assistance and phoned emergency services.

Detective Inspector Foreman described it as a "senseless attack" which had taken a young person's life.

"There are no words that can undo the tragic events of that morning. There's nothing that can ease the pain and sadness of those who knew and loved Aiden, and my thoughts are very much with them today."
