Rossmore Park in Co Monaghan is the most popular forest park in the country.

The park on the outskirts of Monaghan town attracted nearly 350,000 visitors last year.

Official rankings for the top twenty Coillte sites in 2022 were revealed today.

Also among the most popular in the top 5 were Ticknock in Co Dublin, Donadea Forest Park in Kildare, Tintern Abbey and the Hell Fire Club Forest in Dublin.

Today, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys announced €3 million in funding to develop and upgrade more than 300 forest parks, walking trails and outdoor amenities.

This includes €2 million for improving 280 recreational facilities on Coillte owned lands and a further €1 million to deliver 25 new outdoor projects like walking trails, loops, boardwalks, ecotrails and carpark facilities.

The investment is part of a strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte.

Minister Humphrey's made the announcement during a visit to Killykeen Forest Park in Co Cavan, which will receive €144,000 to resurface its carpark.

The Minister said that Ireland's outdoors – including forest parks, trails, uplands and blueways - are "among the best in the world".

She said they were beneficial to our physical and mental health, but are also important assets in attracting tourists and supporting local economies.

Coillte’s Head of Recreation Daithi de Forge said that Coillte continues to deliver the highest quality outdoor forest recreation experiences for communities nationwide.

"We have an open forest policy and we’re proud to support local businesses such as café operators, bike hire providers and many others who partner with us and the services that make a trip to Coillte’s forests so enjoyable for our visitors."
