A 32-year-old man who was critically injured in a stabbing in Cork city centre on Wednesday evening has died.

Jason Butler, of Deerpark House, Friar's Walk in Cork, passed away at Cork University Hospital.

Earlier today, a man was brought before the District Court charged with assaulting Mr Butler arising out of that incident.

Mr Butler was drinking with two other people on the Grand Parade in Cork on Wednesday evening when a row broke out. He was stabbed and critically injured.

He was taken to Cork University Hospital where doctors fought to save his life.

This evening, the Garda Press Office confirmed in a statement that Mr Butler had died from his injuries.

Mr Butler was originally from Midleton in east Cork. He was unemployed and lived at Deerpark House in Friar's Walk in Cork, a home run by the charity Depaul to provide support services for people to move from homelessness.

A post-mortem examination on his body will be conducted tomorrow by State Pathologist Dr SallyAnne Collis.

The incident happened on Grand Parade

A man arrested on the Grand Parade a short time after gardaí arrived at the scene on Wednesday evening was questioned at the Bridewell Garda Station.

This morning, 29-year old Aaron Babington of 25 Churchfield Avenue, Churchfield, in Cork, was brought before the court charged with assault causing harm to Mr Butler.

Detective Garda Pat Russell gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said Mr Babington made no reply when charged.

Sergeant Pat Lyons said gardaí were objecting to bail.

Judge Olann Kelleher remanded Mr Babington in custody.

He will be back before the court again next Thursday.
