Fire service personnel from Galway are bringing a gorse fire on the outskirts of the city under control.

The blaze broke out close to the Rahoon Road earlier this evening.

It spread through an area near the Boleybeg townland, with plumes of smoke visible from the nearby suburb of Knocknacarra.

Firefighters from Galway city and Athenry have been dealing with the outbreak. They were supported by colleagues from An Cheathrú Rua, who used drones to assess the trajectory and extent of the fire.

A section of the Rahoon Road has been closed to traffic, to allow emergency service vehicles access the scene.
