Hundreds of people have attended a service of remembrance for a Mayo man who died in Ukraine last month.

Finbar Cafferkey was fighting with troops defending the country from the Russian invasion, when he was killed near Bakhmut, on 19 April.

The 45-year-old was from Acaill, Co Mayo.

This evening, a special service was held in his honour, in his home place of Cashel.

Members of the Ukrainian presented a floral wreath at the service

Mr Cafferkey is survived by his parents, Tom and Celine, along with two brothers and two sisters.

Among those who travelled to the gathering were a number of members of the Ukrainian community living in Co Mayo.

They presented a floral wreath, on behalf of Ukraine residents displaced by the Russian attack, to mark the sacrifice made by the Achill native.

Mr Cafferkey's father told those who attended the event that his son had been killed with two other volunteers, after they were caught up in sustained mortar fire in the south east of the country, almost a month ago.

His mother described him as someone who "had a heart for all humanity".

Celine Cafferkey said the volunteer fighter "just didn’t die with courage, he lived with courage."

The remains of the 45-year-old have yet to be recovered and repatriated from Ukraine.

His family hope to lay him to rest in the coming months.
