Carer stole over €45,000 from pensioner, court hears

A woman who pleaded guilty to stealing in excess of €45,000 from an elderly woman for whom she was acting as a carer has seen sentencing in her case adjourned to allow her to raise compensation for the victim.

Catherine Gregg, 46, of The Cottage, Ballinaclashet, Belgooly, Co Cork, recently pleaded guilty to 17 different theft charges.

She was remanded on bail and sent forward for sentencing at Cork Circuit Criminal Court today.

The charges were brought under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Theft and Fraud Offences Act. They relate to when Ms Gregg was employed as a carer for a pensioner.

The offences occurred on dates from 1 September 2018 to 30 September 2021 and involve varying amounts.

Sgt Paul Kelly previously told Bandon District Court that the total amount stolen from the injured party was €45,773.93.

The largest amount taken at any given time was €1,866.69 which dated back to November 2018. However, smaller amounts were also stolen at various intervals during the offending behaviour of the defendant.

Ms Gregg appeared before Cork Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing today. Judge Helen Boyle remanded Ms Gregg on continuing bail until her next court appearance on 14 November.

The case was adjourned to allow Ms Gregg the opportunity to raise compensation for the victim in the case.

Free legal aid was previously assigned in the case.
