Man appears in court over Co Monaghan assault

A 28-year-old man has appeared in court this morning, charged in relation to an assault on a woman in her 60s in Carrickmacross over the weekend.

Nyal Tumelty from Coolderry, Inniskeen appeared before Monaghan District Court charged with assault causing harm at Cloughvalley, Carrickmacross on Saturday, 22 April.

Gardaí previously said the woman was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where she is in a critical but stable condition.

Today, Detective Garda Ciaran Marks gave evidence of arresting the accused yesterday afternoon.

He asked that the accused be remanded in custody.

Court presenter, Sergeant Lisa McEntee, told the court there were no directions from the DPP and a file would be required to be prepared.

There was no application for bail, an application for legal aid was granted and Mr Tumelty was remanded in custody to appear before the court again next week via videolink.
