A clean-up operation is continuing in Oughterard in Co Galway following an oil spill near the Owenriff River yesterday morning.

Inland Fisheries Ireland confirmed yesterday that the leak came from a tank adjacent to the river which is in a Special Area of Conservation.

A protective boom was installed around the affected area yesterday in an effort to contain the oil.

It is not known how much oil has spilled however a spokesperson for the fire service today said that the tank from which the oil leaked can take 1,000 litres and that a couple of hundred litres have been recovered so far from gullies and the surrounding area.

The Owenriff River is a popular destination for anglers and is home to the International Mayfly fishing Festival every May.

The Environmental Protection Agency said they are aware of the oil spill incident in Oughterard.

Galway County Council is leading the investigation and clean-up of the spill with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The EPA say they are available to assist should it be required.

A spokesperson for Inland Fisheries Ireland said the situation "was in hand and they believe at this stage there has been minimal risk to fish".
