US President Joe Biden will address crowds outside St Muredach's Cathedral in Ballina, Co Mayo, this Friday evening from 7pm.

Anyone wishing to attend the free event must register on the US Embassy in Ireland's website.

Gates at the junction of Barret and Tolan Streets and Dillon Terrace and Lower Pearse Street will open at 5.30pm.

A limited free shuttle bus service will operate from 4.30pm from Knockmore GAA, Castleconnor Community Centre, Mercy Road, Crossmolina and McVann furniture on Killala Road, north Ballina.

The Bus Éireann bus depot and Irish Rail are a 10 and 15 minute walk respectively from the gates.

A drop-off point for wheelchair users will be available on Barret Street, just before Tolan Street.

Joe Blewitt, a third cousin of Mr Biden, said there is a "great buzz" in the area ahead of the president's arrival.

His great-great-great grandfather Edward Blewitt sold 27,000 bricks to the St Muredach's Cathedra in 1827, which helped him to afford to buy tickets for himself and his family to sail to America decades later in 1851.

Mr Blewitt, who is helping with final preparations, said they are building the stage at the moment.

"I am very excited, there is a great buzz all around the town. It has just been crazy," he said.

"The town will never have known anything like it, it is just great."

Ballina is twinned with Scranton in the US, Mr Biden's hometown.

Last week Independent councillor Mark Duffy, Cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District, said Mayo looked forward to welcoming the US President.

Describing Mr Biden as a "son of Ballina" he said that not only will he celebrate the Good Friday Agreement anniversary, he will also celebrate Ballina's 300th anniversary celebrations.
