A woman has died in a horse-riding incident at Glenamaddy in Co Galway.

Heather Hewitt from Williamstown, Co Galway, was originally from East Sussex in England.

A spokesperson for the Glenamaddy Equestrian Centre said the incident took place on Thursday when the centre was being used by a riding club and it is understood that it was a tragic accident which happened while a horse was being mounted.

It is understood Ms Hewitt was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Galway University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out.

Emergency services attended the scene of the incident on Thursday.

An investigator from the Health and Safety Authority attended the scene yesterday.
