A man who died after an altercation in Belfast five weeks ago was a serving police officer who was off-duty at the time.

The PSNI have named him as 41-year-old Colin Prime, a father of two from Banbridge, Co Down.

They've begun a murder inquiry.

He was assaulted in the early hours of 29 January in the Malone Road area of the city.

He had been waiting for a lift in a carpark beside a licensed premises between 3am and 3.30am when he and a friend were approached by three men.

A fight broke out which spilled out into the road at its junction with Eglantine Avenue.

Mr Prime was seriously assaulted and died in hospital on Monday.

"We know that this area would have been relatively busy with vehicles at the time, particularly with taxi drivers and would appeal to anyone who may have been in the vicinity to check their dashcam for relevant footage," said Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin.

The police said Mr Prime's job as an officer was not a factor in the incident.

A post mortem examination will now be carried out to determine the next stage in the investigation.

Three men who had been arrested remain on police bail.
