Day surgery has been cancelled at Ennis Hospital today to allow for extra capacity at University Hospital Limerick.

It comes as UHL faces another day with very high presentations at its emergency department.

In a statement, the University of Limerick Hospital Group said a total of 246 patients presented to its ED yesterday, and that followed a busy weekend when UHL and its other sites saw high numbers of very sick patients.

As a result, it has had to cancel day care surgery at Ennis Hospital to allow for additional capacity for medical patients to be transferred there.

Elective surgery is continuing at its other sites, but the hospital management team is reviewing the situation on a day-to-day basis.

Additional ward rounds are taking place to identify patients who can be transferred to other hospitals in the group at Ennis, Nenagh and St Johns, but it warns that anyone coming to UHL ED with a less urgent medical condition faces a long wait for care.

The INMO trolley watch count said there were 96 patients waiting on trolleys and on wards today, with 109 patients waiting yesterday - the highest figure so far this year at UHL.
