Thousands without electricity as thunderstorm warning issued for 12 counties

Thousands of homes around the country have been left without power due adverse weather conditions today.

It comes as a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Munster, Connacht and Co Donegal. It is in effect until 9pm this evening.

Met Éireann forecast heavy showers and thunderstorms, along with strong and gusty southwesterly winds and possible falls of hail.

It said disruption is expected, including spot flooding and dangerous road conditions, especially near coasts.

The largest outages are in Salthill in Co Galway, where 700 customers are without power and in Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny, where 600 customer have been left without electricity.

ESB Networks said there are also smaller pockets of customers without power in parts of Conamara, Mayo and Kerry.

A spokesperson said the outages were predominantly weather related and the scale of disruption is in line with past experience of similar Yellow weather alert warnings.

Earlier, power was restored to several thousand homes and businesses after ESB Networks' repair crews worked to repair faults.

The majority of those impacted this morning were in Cork. In Kilbarry on the northside of Cork city, 1,924 customers were without power.
